DESCRIPTION:

Part 1 (Virtual): Thursday, April 9th 2-4pm

Location: Zoom

Are you looking for a sustainable income stream that aligns with your creative values—and brings joy instead of burnout? If you’re overwhelmed by grants, inconsistent gigs, or pressure to monetize through social media, Patreon might offer a refreshing alternative—or an additional source of revenue. But is it right for you? In this candid and interactive virtual workshop (Part 1), artist and educator Midori shares how she built a thriving Patreon that supports both her creative work and global learning community. As an independent artist—not a Patreon employee—she offers honest insights, real-life strategies, and examples that go beyond what the platform provides. Whether you’re new to Patreon or have a page that isn’t quite working, this workshop will help you clarify your goals, assess fit, and imagine what success could look like for you.

What we’ll cover:

  • What Patreon is—and what it isn’t
  • Who it works well for (and who it might not)
  • Tips, pitfalls, and lessons from Midori’s 8+ years on the platform
  • Preparing for a meaningful launch
  • Using Patreon for creative accountability and motivation
  • A live walkthrough of the backend of a working artist’s Patreon
  • What Patreon won’t tell you (but she will)
  • Q&A Bring your curiosity, questions, and creative dreams.

Part 2 (In-person): Friday, April 10th 5:30-7:30pm

ABOUT SPEAKER/ORG

IAM’s mission is to steward and empower independent art and media projects that foster community and civic participation, and facilitate cultural engagement and free expression.

Media, journalism, the arts and culture are all arenas of social interaction and civic engagement. Yet even in the Internet era, these arenas are closed to public participation due to commercial or institutional barriers. We champion media producers and culture makers doing significant work to advance civic engagement and cultural participation in our communities and our democracy.
