Let's start with this question: What's a scene?

A scene begins with consent from the participants to step into a situation out of one's ordinary, day to day life. The objective is ostensibly about fun, but often there's more to it, and not every part is a giggly thrill ride in funville. There are activities that create many different sensations. There may be ordeals to be put through. Emotional and physical response to the ordeals are super charged and heighten the sense of life lived, often remembered with its uniqueness and intensity for rest of one's life. For most part there is a clear beginning, middle and end. There are special arrangements to allow the participants to take a break from or even step away from the experience. Specialized garments may be worn. The participants speak in unique jargon and argot. Unique terms of address and names may be used. Hierarchy and power dynamics are shifted. Often one party feels they are serving another or subservient to another. And after enduring all that sensible people think are nuts, you come out feeling irrationally accomplished, ecstatic, exhausted, bonded to others and proud.

Tomorrow, Saturday, June 5th, is Day 0 of AIDS LifeCycle and beginning of my big fat bottoming scene to the world.

I was going to write something sappy, waxing romantic, but then I realized that all this is a big old D/s scene I've carefully orchestrated for myself.

I consented to spend 9 days, having a clear beginning and an end, to be roadie for this 3,000 people event. We'll be on the road all day, sleeping in tents. I can't do much about my regular work or any of my other day-to-day concerns. Most of the time I won't even be able to get phone reception, removing me from the ordinary. I will wear dorky safety neon colored t-shirts worthy of any humiliation scene, bunny ears and walkie-talkies. I will be given tasks to complete, wake up before dawn and come in after dark, and not necessarily enjoy everything I have to do. I can always step away from the whole event should there be a good reason - but I manage to conveniently forget that. The powers that be constantly check in about our wellbeing, but it's up to me to speak up when I just can't take it anymore. We've got our own community lingo; "On your left", "clicker count", "loop back", "I'm a kitty you're a kitty", etc. My name isn't Midori during the ride, and most people at ALC have no idea what I do day-to-day. My name for the week seems to be "Sweep" or "Roadie". Superficially my job is to making the ride a great and safe event for the cyclists, but the real authority that I serve is the Greater Good where HIV, and all the issues around it, is history. I do this year after year, and yet I know that in just over a week I'll be totally exhausted, bonded to folks I would have never met other wise, feel accomplished, proud and tired to the bone. I have a very odd idea of "fun".

It's one big weird scene for me.

I'll be voice blogging my insanity, at least twice a day, on my personal blog site. Log on and listen to my bottoming adventure.
